Community Gardening is CASTL's Newest Community Initiative at Bell Community Garden. The garden is located at 3841 Bell Avenue, in St. Louis, MO. 63108. Interested volunteers and members of the community at large can visit the garden on most Saturdays between 10am to 12 noon.
The 2021 project consists of cultivating mainly herbs and vegetables crops which are native to the area, but also others that are more common in the tropics - all in 3 large 20ft. x 5 ft., well maintained and intriguing raised garden beds.
Specifically during the Spring season of 2021, and gradually working outside after the Covid-19 lockdown, and while still wearing protective facemask and practicing social distancing precautions, the group took pride in sowing the following crops: red Pontiac and Yukon Potatoes, Carrots (New Kuroda), Turnips, Malabar Spinach, Pinto Beans, red and white, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cabbage, Watermelon, Various kinds of peppers that included Scotch Bonnet) Cantaloupe, Celery, Okra, Garlic, Onions and Cilantro.
All together, the project has been a much welcomed CASTL endeavor. It is designed to foster sustainable living, togetherness, environmental care, and civic engagement. Food harvested are shared among CASTL members, volunteers and designated local community organizations that serve persons affected by food insecurity in St. Louis.
